Sigma Components – Avingtrans Plc’s aerospace division – has appointed Steve Barbour as managing director of its Sigma Composites business.

Barbour, who began his career as a commercial graduate trainee at Rolls-Royce, brings a wealth of experience to the role, most recently as managing director of AIM Composites in Cambridge.

Steve said: “I’m excited to be joining the team at Sigma. The business has grown quickly over the last few years and enjoys a burgeoning reputation as an innovator in the market, developing performance-critical components for a range of industries.

“At Sigma Composites, we already have a strong track record manufacturing components for industries as diverse as performance motorsport and defence and we are very much looking to develop these areas, as well as applying our technical expertise to new applications in the aerospace industry.”

Mark Johnson, founder and managing director of Sigma Components, added: “I’m delighted that Steve has accepted this new role and am looking forward to working closely with him – and our composites team – to develop our capabilities in this area.

“We are investing significantly in research and development across our businesses and our composites site is at the forefront of this activity.

“Projects such as COMPipe – our CleanSky-funded lightweight composite pipe – are already delivering exciting results and I’m confident that, with Steve’s guidance, the business will continue to grow and become a key part of our operations.”
