Sigma exhibits composites technologies at Advanced Engineering Show27 Oct 2015
Sigma Components, which forms Avingtrans plc’s aerospace division – will showcase its range of lightweight components at this year’s Advanced Engineering Show (Stand E136).
Star of the show is COMPipe – a composite aero-engine pipe that delivers weight savings of 50% over traditionally-manufactured pipes. The result of a CleanSky funded programme, COMPipe is capable of withstanding operating temperatures over 200°C, operating pressures of up to 4000 psi and a typical engine operating environment, including fireproof requirements.
The Sigma Lite range also includes lightweight end fittings – a variation of Sigma’s successful self-locking nuts, – concept designs for metallic end-fittings produced using additive manufacturing techniques, and composite drive shafts.
Mark Johnson, managing director of Sigma Components, said: “Sigma has invested heavily in research and development over recent years and we’re excited to be able to share these new developments with visitors to the Advanced Engineering show.
“Since we acquired our composites business in 2012, we’ve been working hard to develop new technologies, as well as applying our specialist expertise – developed serving automotive, defence and motorsport customers – to new markets, including aerospace.”
One of the key programmes Sigma will be providing updates on at the show is its Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) project to develop composite drive shafts for both aerospace and automotive applications.
Mark continued: “The AMSCI programme builds on the success of COMPipe, adapting new technologies and manufacturing techniques we developed as part of that programme to meet the different performance and production requirements of drive shaft applications.
“We’re already seeing some exciting results from this programme and are looking forward to sharing these, and the rest of the Sigma Lite range, with customers old and new at the show.”
